Charlie Parker Jazz Festival 2023

Writer: Jazz PaparazzoJazz Paparazzo

Capturing pure magic at the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival was a privilege. An electrifying lineup of world-class jazz musicians played tribute to the extraordinary legacy of Charlie Parker, and it was a mesmerizing experience for all music lovers. From vibrant improvisations to smooth melodies, to be transported to a different world as the notes fill the air.

The festival included concerts on Saturday, August 26, at Marcus Garvey Park and Sunday, August 27, at Tompkins Square. The former was hosted by WBGO's Sheila Anderson.

The Cookers are a group of innovative artists who embody a sense of community. Most of this super septet—comprising Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, David Weiss, and Donald Harrison—were veterans of the heady mid-’60s, when hard bops gave way to the next wave of jazz.

The featured performances by Endea Owens and the Cookout, Nduduzo Makhathini trio,

Akua Allrich and The Tribe, Charles McPherson with Terell Stafford, Something Else!

Vincent Herring Septet, Chelsea Baratz and Andromeda Turre, Michael Mayo.
